President Trump signed four executive orders Friday afternoon related to health care and drug prices, as part of his Administration’s ongoing effort at reducing the costs of prescription drugs. The orders are designed to bring prices in America down to be on par with costs overseas.
“The four orders I’m signing today will completely restructure the prescription drug market in terms of pricing and everything else to make these medications affordable and accessible for all Americans,” President Trump noted.
One order targets insulin and EpiPen prices. Another order would allow states, pharmacies and wholesalers to import drugs from Canada. Yet another order directs drug makers to deliver rebates straight to patients. The last one provides for using lower international prices to pay for some Medicare drugs.
While President Trump issued these orders, it could take months for the White House to finalize them.
A drive to pass major drug-pricing legislation stalled this year in Congress, precipitating the president’s executive orders. White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said in a statement that the executive orders “follow a long list of decisive actions taken by President Trump to reduce the costs of prescription drugs and further deliver on his promise to ensure every American has access to better healthcare at a lower cost.”
